When I realized that we would still be in quarantine during my birthday this year I decided that I would not make any formal plans; but have a really low-key birthday at home with my family. Usually I celebrate my birthday for the entire month of May. To start, I received a mystery box of gifts from May 1st to the 24th from an anonymous source I was pleasantly surprised with. The instructions in the box were clear: open a gift each day and indulge. My birthday was already off to an amazing start!
With each passing day and with each gift opened, I began to become excited for May 24th which would be the culmination of my celebration. I must admit, having a gift to open each day really elevated my mood during this quarantine. It lifted my spirits and gave me something to look forward to.
In previous years on the weekend of my birthday, my family and friends typically have a celebratory lunch together and shares birthday wishes and blessings. We still went ahead with that , albeit on a much smaller scale but #boothang rounded off the speeches with a beautiful video with well wishes from friends and family from all around the world. I was absolutely blown away! It allowed me to realize that I am loved and care for more than I know. I ended my birthday eve with a night of music and games. Little did I know what was in store for me on my actual birthday.....
On my big day, I woke up and had some quiet reflection time to pray and thank God for bringing me into a new year. Glad I had a bit of precious time, because my daughter's came bursting into my room pulling me to come outside. When I stepped outside, my heart melted! My daughters decorated the lawn with birthday garland. I went for a bike ride and came back to balloons sent from San Francisco.
Next, the hubby told me we were going to the Mariana since it was finally open since the lockdown was implemented. We skipped rocks in the water and enjoyed time together. Driving home, I thought about how perfect, yet different this birthday was. Little did I know more was in store. I just believed my video messages was the big birthday surprise and I was perfectly content. As I pulled into my driveway I was gobsmacked. There in the center of the lawn was a table of treats and a very beautiful backdrop. My family walked up with signs and the music started to play.
As I danced around the lawn, I heard the faint honking of horns getting louder and closer. Turning around, I saw too many cars to count spreading love, gifts and birthday wishes. As each car pulled up the were handed a water bottle, popcorn, skittles and a dumpling, ackee, plantain bite. This drive-by was nothing like I’ve ever seen. It was also totally unexpected as a few days prior, I was in a drive-by for a friend and did not think it would be done again so close together. This drive-by was next level! An experience that all who attended and I would remember.
I was overwhelmed with gratitude and amazed at how my tribe showed up and showed out for me. During the very peculiar time where we have not been able to socially gather, the drive-by has given me the push I need to remain positive and hopeful during this pandemic. What special element would you add to your drive-by celebration?
