Tough, optimistic, neat, enthusiastic, intelligent, and loving were the adjectives used to describe me from my eldest daughter.
I haven’t always been big on celebrating birthdays but once I turned 30, something shifted. I started to reflect more, and appreciate more of what life had to offer and realized that I had to make the most of each and everyday.
The last three years I have used hashtags as a theme for the year: #cheeersTo33, #moreAt34, #thriveAt35. I wanted this birthday to exude positivity and happiness.
Growing up, I didn’t really have "birthday parties" and thought that I would plan on having a party to celebrate life. First on the list... find a location. Searching for a location presented to be more difficult than I had anticipated, especially while maintaining the budget Boothang insisted I stick to. After weeks of searching I found a location that fit my criteria perfectly. I could finally put my plans in action.
Since this party was officially happening I needed to find something to wear! I didn’t have any specific looks in mind. I went to a boutique that provides stylish apparel that I love 9/10 times. Play It Again Val’s
had a rose sequence dress that fit perfectly with no alterations. I knew I wanted to extenuate the dress and opted for adding a tulle half skirt. My girlfriend of The Allen Avenue made the skirt for me and it completed my look. I was able to use Aldo shoes I bought last year for a wedding. You know I always have to stay thrifty-even on my birthday.
I was treated by my sister to have my makeup done by Cole Beauty. She did not disappoint. My sister insisted on a glam look and that is exactly what I received.
B really came through with the sweet table and even made a ferror rocher tower in lieu of a cake, because I’m not a huge cake person. My family was in charge of the food and they are always on point. I love my Jamaican food. Menu included stuffed ackee and salt fish fried dumplings, plantain, cocktail patties, spring rolls and meatballs. I had two signature drinks, "Thrive" and "Flourish". And most of all, I had a team of people behind me to support my endeavours which I will forever be grateful for. My tribe rocks!
As I step into this new year of life, I’m excited to see how the journey unfolds. I know with my optimism, and positive outlook, I can only attract greatness my way. Whatever the outcome is I plan to keep thriving, smiling, and flourishing. I hope you’re ready for the ride, because I am.
